Career Speakers

Career Speaker Option
Career speakers are scheduled several times during the school year on Wednesdays during advisory. Students may sign up for a speaker and pick up a career speaker pass and evaluation form from Ms. Erzberger in the Career Center (W-411). When they have finished with the speaker session, they complete the form and return it to their advisory teacher.

March 7 - Radiologist - Scott Nielson, MD

April 4 - Registered Nurse - Donna McKinney

May 30 - Pilot - Kevin McLaughlin

Career Interview Option
Locate an individual in a career area of interest and conduct a career interview. Complete the questionnaire and turn it in to your advisory teacher.
Career Exploration Opportunities
Career exploration opportunities to gain further knowledge about specific fields are available through career speakers, job shadowing, post secondary school visits, military representatives, resume writing and our Guidance Department and Career Center.

Student Responsibilities:

1. Identify a career path and chose one career speaker of interest or two career videos of interest or locate an individual in a career of interest and conduct one career interview.
2. Inform yourself about current speakers or career videos offered through the CHS web site, morning announcements and postings in the Career Center - W411. Career Speakers will come during advisory on Wednesdays to the specified location. Career videos will broadcast to 9th grade advisories on specified Wednesdays.
3. Fourth quarter advisory credit will be given based upon completion of the career activity.

School Responsibilities:

1. Provide a variety of speakers to discuss career opportunities and job
responsibilities and provide career videos to view during advisory. Provide a list of possible career interview contacts.
2. Inform students of upcoming speakers and career videos through the announcements and postings in the Career Center W-411.
3. Supervise students during the speakers and provide opportunities to further knowledge in a particular area.
4. Advisory teachers will collect summarization sheets for advisory credit and will forward to the Career Center to be filed with the student's Career Portfolio.
5. Award credit for 4th quarter advisory is based upon attendance of a career speaker presentation or video observation or career interview and successful completion of the summarization sheet.
6. Continue partnerships with career speakers and their businesses.

Parent Responsibilities:

1. Read and discuss the materials from the school regarding your child's career plans.
2. Encourage your child to attend a career speaker or observe the career videos or conduct a career interview.
3. Call the school contact person with any questions or ideas you may have that will support your child in discovering their potential in the World of Work.
4. Discuss the career speaker, career interview or career video experience with your child and encourage continued exploration of their place in the World of Work.
